老君曰
Lao Chun said:
大道無形生育天地
The Great Tao has no form, producing and nourishing heaven and earth.
大道無情運行日月
The Great Tao has no passions, causing the sun and moon to revolve.
大道無名長養萬物
The Great Tao has no name, effecting the growth of all things.
吾不知其名強名曰道
I do not know its name, but I make an effort and call it the Tao.
夫道者
Now, of the Tao:
有清有濁 有動有靜
There is the Pure and the Turbid; there is Motion and Rest.
天清地濁 天動地靜
Heaven is pure and earth is turbid; heaven moves and earth is at rest.
男清女濁 男動女靜
The masculine is pure and the feminine is turbid; the masculine moves and the feminine is at rest.
降本流末 而生萬物
Emerging from its source and flowing to its end, it produced all things.
清者濁之源 動者靜之基
The pure is the source of the turbid; motion is the foundation of rest.
人能常清靜 天地悉皆歸
If a man can always be pure and still, heaven and earth will both settle in him.
夫
Now,
人神好清 而心擾之
The spirit of man loves purity, but his mind disturbs it.
人心好靜 而欲牽之
The mind of man loves stillness, but his desires draw it away.
常能遣其欲而心自靜
If he could always send his desires away, his mind would of itself become still.
澄其心而神自清
Let his mind be made clean, and his spirit will of itself become pure.
自然六慾不生
Naturally, the six desires will not arise,
三毒消滅
And the three poisons will disappear.
所以不能者
The reason why men fail to attain to this,
為心未澄 欲未遣也
Is because their minds have not been cleansed, and their desires have not been sent away.
能遣之者
Those who are able to send them away:
內觀其心 心無其心
外觀其形 形無其形
遠觀其物 物無其物
三者既悟 唯見於空
When these three are understood, one sees only vacancy.
觀空亦空 空無所空
Observing vacancy, it is also vacant; vacancy has nothing to be vacant.
所空即無 無無亦無
When that which is vacant is gone, nothingness is also nothing.
無無既無 湛然常寂
When nothingness is no more, there is profound and constant stillness.
即無所寂 欲豈能生
When stillness has nothing to be still, how can desires arise?
欲既不生 即是真靜
When desires no longer arise, there is true stillness.
真常應物 真常得性
True constancy responds to things; true constancy realizes nature.
常應常靜 常清靜矣
Constantly responding, constantly still; always pure and still.
如此清淨 漸入眞道
With such purity and stillness, one gradually enters the True Tao.
即入眞道 名為得道
Having entered the True Tao, it is called "Attaining the Tao."
雖名得道 實無所得
Though called "Attaining the Tao," in reality nothing is attained.
為化眾生 名為得道
For the sake of transforming all beings, it is called "Attaining the Tao."
能悟之者 可傳聖道
He who can understand this may transmit the Sacred Tao.
老君曰
Lao Chun said:
上士無爭 下士好爭
The scholar of the highest class does not strive; the scholar of the lower class is fond of striving.
上德不德 下德執德
The highest virtue is not "virtue"; the lower virtue clings to "virtue."
執著之者 不明道德
Those who cling and display it, do not understand the Tao and its Virtue.
眾生所以不得眞道者
The reason why all beings do not obtain the True Tao,
為有妄心
Is because they have erroneous minds.
即有妄心 即驚其神
Having erroneous minds, they startle their spirits.
即驚其神 即著萬物
Startling their spirits, they become attached to all things.
即著萬物 即生貪求
Attaching to all things, they give rise to greed.
即生貪求 即是煩惱
Giving rise to greed, they fall into anxiety.
煩惱妄想 憂苦身心
Anxieties and delusive thoughts plague the body and mind.
便遭濁辱 流浪生死
Then they suffer shame and defilement, drifting through life and death.
常沉苦海 永失眞道
Forever sinking in the sea of bitterness, forever losing the True Tao.
眞常之道 悟者自得
The True and Constant Tao! Those who understand it obtain it.
得悟道者 常清靜矣
Those who obtain the Tao will abide in Purity and Stillness.
